The roundabout will actually be open to traffic in August 2010 and officially open in September 2010. Once it is available, you will need to follow these roundabout road rules:
Motor Vehicles:
- Slow down as you approach the yield line.
- Look for a gap in traffic: vehicles already in the roundabout do NOT stop. This is similar to a "Right turn on Red"
- Proceed slowly, counterclockwise around the central island of the roundabout. (Maximum speed ~ 20 mph)
- Do NOT stop in the roundabout.
- USE YOUR Turn Signal to indicate exit. Do not pass a bicycle in the roundabout.
- Continue through the roundabout if you see an emergency vehicle approaching from behind. Exit the roundabout and then pull over to the right side of the road.
Bicycles:
- Bicyclists are permitted to ride within the roundabout and should be treated as another vehicle.
Roundabouts can sound a bit daunting however, having dealt with several of them over the years, including the one in Elizabethtown, this writer can assure you they are actually quite easy, do save time and can actually add to the safety of the roadway.
